Health Tourism
and Choosing the Right Hospital

Health Tourism

One of the most important factors when weighing your options will be finding the hospital that’s best suited for you. This decision involves several criteria, including:
  • Cost

  • Technology and equipment

  • Certifications and recognition by local and national authorities

Additionally, as the industry continues to develop, we feel hospitals should also offer more services directly related, such as:

  • Their own in-house health tourism department

  • Bilingual personnel

  • International certifications

In the case of health tourism in Mexico, which is the option we recommend for your health tourism experience, there is a characteristic phenomenon (described later) that will help you get a general understanding of the existing options:

Health Tourism

The three cities with the best hospitals (in addition to being staffed with more doctors and having more tourist and general services) are:
  • Mexico City

  • Guadalajara, Jalisco

  • Monterrey, Nuevo Leon

Outside of these three cities, the level drops in terms of the size and facilities of the hospitals that can offer first-rate services to health tourism patients.

In these three cities there are three basic categories of hospitals:

(1) Top-tier hospitals:

  • Fully equipped with the latest technology, on-site services such as blood banks, labs, medical imaging, and a complete medical staff that covers practically every specialty.

  • Nationally and internationally recognized and certified.

  • These kinds of hospitals can clearly offer medical tourism services with the kind of attention and results equal to—or even better than— what’s offered in the States.
(Note: this type of hospital exists in an economy like Mexico’s because it serves the private insurance market and some businesses, like banks and large companies, that offer their employees high quality health services.)

(2) Medium-cost hospitals:
  • Although they are very economic, their services are almost exclusively geared toward the local market.  They serve the middle class in many cities and regular insurance companies.

  • Their facilities are very good, as is the quality of their services and results, but neither their facilities nor their buildings are of the latest generation. The majority of them focus on just two or three specialties.

  • It should be noted that many local people prefer to be treated in this kind of hospital, even when they can afford to pay for top-tier care, because they, too, are looking for cost savings and know the results will be the same.

  • While these hospitals can produce excellent results, they aren’t fully equipped to handle the demands of health tourism.
(3) Low-cost hospitals:
  • Though they may be sufficient, they are not even a topic of conversation when it comes to health tourism.

  • The majority of these hospitals are family-run businesses.

  • They are often found in beach destinations.

  • In Mexico, a hospital in a beach destination is not at the same level as a top-rated hospital in a metropolitan zone.

  • The majority of them offer a narrow range of services such as cosmetic or weight loss surgeries that are deemed to be low-risk procedures.

Their limited range is mentioned not to devalue these hospitals, but rather to note the difference in the facilities available and to educate people who are searching for health tourism services in Mexico about the alternatives that exist in the country.

We believe the difference is simple:

Metropolitan zones offer a wider range of services and we would recommend them without hesitation for delicate procedures and those that have a risk of complications because, if there are any problems, these hospitals have EVERYTHING necessary to resolve them.

Beach zones can be an excellent alternative for procedures that are simple and have a limited risk of complications such as cosmetic or weight loss surgeries.
Based on all the above listed criteria, it remains clear that it’s best to get a recommendation by an expert that knows Mexico’s medical industry in depth and can give advice based on facts and firsthand experience.

This site was constructed with two basic objectives in mind:  first, to offer clear and complete information about health tourism in Mexico and promote the best it has to offer and, second, to connect people directly with service providers by means of a cost estimate custom made for every individual interested in receiving treatment in Mexico.
